THIS WEEKS EVENTS:

2010 - 07/29 - Ear to the Ground: Above This Fire / Suede Brothers / This Moment In Black History / Prisoners - 9pm FREE!
In celebration of Limewire’s release of the free ‘Ear to the Ground: Cleveland’ compilation, the Grog Shop is pleased to present four of that compilation’s bands in performance. Hardcore aggro-mongers Above This Fire, Sabbath-infected boogie rockers the Suede Brothers, venerable post-punk bomb-throwers This Moment In Black History and garage anthemists The Prisoners will gather to rock your nards into eager and willing submission for a show that’s as free as the collection it commemorates.
2010 - 07/29 - Blitzen Trapper - The Grog Shop Presents At The Beachland Ballroom - Blitzen Trapper / Pomegranates / The Cloud Nothings- 9pm $14 adv / $16 dos
Blitzen Trapper is an experimental rock/folk sextet which formed in Portland, Oregon, United States in 2000. The band consists of Eric Earley (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboards), Marty Marquis (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboards) and Brian Koch (drums, vocals). In various combinations and guises, the group had already played a long time together before the “crystalization event” in July 2000 on the slopes of the famous volcano Mt Hood. Since then they have performed for audiences of all ages and socioeconomic groups, mostly playing close to home and for many years distributing recordings like itinerant madmen, for free.
2010 - 07/30 - IPhonic / Mos Scocious / Doxx - 9pm $8
Recently voted Best Local Band in Chicago by the Chicago Reader, Mos Scocious has been taking the midwest by storm. Their live show is an in-your-face dose of freak funk. They have a knack for fusing different genres together, from afro-cuban and motown soul to prog-rock and hip-hop. Lyrically, they are somewhere between Bill Shakespeare and Bill Murray. The poetic sensibility and sarcastic subject matter are a staple of any Mos Scocious show. Leave your troubles behind and COME JOIN THE FREAK OUT!
2010 - 07/31 - Swarm of Bats / Noise By Numbers (ex-Screeching Weasel) / Restless Habs / The Guile - 9pm $5 adv / $7 dos
Though two of its members have much higher-profile pedigrees —Dan “Vapid” Schafer has played in Screeching Weasel and the Riverdales, as well as leading the Methadones, and Jeff Dean is in the Bomb — Nosie By Numbers, their new collaboration with bassist Rick Uncapher (Textbook) and drummer Jimmy Lucido could easily be overlooked outside the punk underground, and that would be a shame. Noise By Numbers draws inspiration from the fertile ’80s indie-rock scene of Husker Du, the Replacements, Dinosaur Jr. and their ilk as well as classic Chicago punk sounds like Naked Raygun and the Effigies to inject a heaping dose of sing-along melody into every propulsive and hard-hitting groove, making for an instantly familiar yet somehow distinctive and fresh-sounding formula. 2010 - 08/01 - Cesspool / Monolith at Tycho / Nights - 8pm $6
"Hailing from Brooklyn, Cesspool draws from a variety of influences to produce a sound that can most succinctly be described as "perverted and sinister yet catchy and fun". Only at a Cesspool show will you hear meticulously arranged compositions that still come off sounding punk, harmonically perverse renditions of songs from the 50s, guitar solos performed on skateboards, or five-part harmony interludes in a song written from the perspective of a person coping with having committed involuntary manslaughter on Black Friday. Audience members will find out that they actually like dancing to creeping, dissonant music with sexual undertones. Joining Cesspool at the Grog Shop will be local Cleveland ambient rock maestros Monolith at Tycho (myspace.com/monolithattycho) and psychadelic shoegazers Nights (myspace.com/nightsband) in what will prove to be exactly what you should be doing with your Sunday night."
2010 - 08/02 - Bear In Heaven / Emeralds / Twin Sister - 9pm $10
Bear in Heaven is a curious, thought provoking quartet based in Brooklyn, NY. Their guitars compliment their synthesizers just right in an ambiguous mish-mosh of ambient sounds and indie rock. Formed in 2002, Bear in Heaven consists of Jon Philpot, Joe Stickney, Adam Wills and Sadek Bazaraa. Their most recent album, "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" takes the listener on a journey as it progresses, creating somewhat abstract moods and textures through music. Bear in Heaven is sure to please the crowd with their interesting, ideological originality.
2010 - 08/03 - Rogue Wave / Gamble House / The Modern Electric - 9pm $13 adv / $15 dos
Rogue Wave formed in 2002 when a newly-unemployed Zach Rogue left his San Francisco home, visited friends in New York City, and returned to California with nearly a full album's worth of textured, cerebral indie pop. Rogue then quit his post in his previous group, the Desoto Reds, and finished the album, which was released on Rogue's own Responsive label under the title Out of the Shadow. As he was completing the record, Rogue decided to form a band in order to perform the material live, and he soon hooked up with drummer/keyboardist Pat Spurgeon, bassist Sonya Westcott, and guitarist Gram LeBron. This outfit played shows in 2003 with the likes of Spoon, Mates of State, and other indie rock big shots. Impressed with their growing buzz, Sub Pop signed Rogue Wave and reissued Out of the Shadow in 2004.
