Cleveland electronic artist Sound On Tape will make his live electronics debut at the Grog Shop on Friday, November 27, presenting a new audio-visual performance designed to bring the expansive world of his music to life.

The performance marks a significant evolution for Sound On Tape, the project of Cleveland producer Marcus Alan Ward. Rather than presenting a conventional DJ set, Sound On Tape plans to use live electronics and visuals provided by Cleveland’s Ladybug A/V Club, and sound to create an immersive experience built around the world he has developed through his music.

His 2025 debut album, Price, was praised by DJ Mag, which described the record as a “lush ode to the Black experience in America,” rooted in garage, R&B, jazz and house. The album has also established Sound On Tape as an increasingly visible voice in Cleveland's electronic music community. Cleveland Magazine included Price among its 50 favorite Cleveland music releases of 2025, recognizing the album's politically charged club tracks and Sound On Tape's energizing live DJ sets.

Sound on Tape

Emotive Electronic Dance Music.

Born in Cleveland, OH, the enigmatic producer Sound On Tape draws influence from legends El-B, Burial, Larry Heard, and DJ Sticky as well as deep seated Black gospel icons CL Franklin, TL Barret, and Mahalia Jackson.

His first EP Hush Harbors cements his unique blend of electronic music rooted in Garage, 2-Step, Jazz and beyond. Released through 904L World Class Sound, the project sonically places him alongside contemporaries Sammy Virji, Overmono, Emma-Jean Thackray, and Higgo.

MOTHERBOARD

MOTHERBOARD is the evolving artistic persona of Kyle Kidd (all pronouns), marking a new phase in their sonic practice. Building on earlier work, it shifts from voice as focal point to voice as environment—immersive, rhythmic, and expansive.

Rooted in the belief that sound shapes emotion and atmosphere, MOTHERBOARD blends gospel, jazz, soul, and blues with electronic, ambient, post-punk, and club music. Drawing from Black sonic lineage, the project explores voice, repetition, and texture as tools for movement, intimacy, and release.

Following the debut album Soothsayer (2022), known for its layered vocal work and emotional depth, MOTHERBOARD expands into a more rhythm-forward, embodied space—music built for both reflection and physical response.

Live, MOTHERBOARD integrates sound, movement, and visual language into immersive performance. Kidd has appeared at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, NPR Tiny Desk, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, SXSW, Le Guess Who, and Big Ears Festival, and has collaborated with artists including Moor Mother, Irreversible Entanglements, Algiers, San Cha, Badger, Dombrance, Joy Anonymous, and talltom.

MOTHERBOARD signals a continuation—refined, expanded, and in motion.
