Fig

Fig feels like listening to queer pop in a mid-century cathedral. Elizabeth Harris, the brain behind fig, is currently based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Music is a creative outlet for many to get out their feelings. For fig, it's also the way they help other people cope. They became a board-certified music therapist after they studied music therapy and jazz voice at Duquesne University (class of 2017).

Elizabeth’s formal voice instruction shows up in her Broadway style singing voice. Her classical voice juxtaposed with pop beats parallel the duality of her traditional Catholic background and queer radicalism. Fig dreams for a day where those two aren’t seen as conflicting.

Fig’s lyrical style is honest, cathartic, and spiritual. They use imagery that feels fantastical like pomegranates growing inside our stomachs to express universal feelings. Their music is laced with evidence of their many facets, and fig elevates their musical queerness to the holiness of being present in your community at Sunday mass.

Figs are dualistic. They’re prosperous as often as their rotting signifies loss in biblical teachings. Elizabeth sees her own duality as an internal fight, only created because of society's expectations that we can only be one thing or nothing at all. Fig is a place to unleash those feelings.
