Coupling controversial lyricism with a playful Americana instrumentation, Phoenix, AZ band Andrew Jackson Jihad demands your attention—much like a car crash begs you not look away. With lyrics focused on serial killers, child abuse, and a vengeful Jesus, how can you not be pulled in? Their music is a conundrum, as its lyrics leave you feeling guilty for humming along, but its instrumentation makes you feel as good as a shot of bourbon.
The band’s constant members are Sean Bonnette (acoustic guitar) and Ben Gallaty (upright bass), with a rotating cast of musicians who fill in on the occasional percussive instrument, horn or kazoo. Bonnette, the band’s main lyricist, draws on his experiences volunteering at a suicide prevention hotline for teenagers as well as time spent working with the homeless in Phoenix for the bleak, yet somehow hopeful outlooks on life that are often reflected in the band’s lyrics.
